It follows Gavi’s second successful pledging conference in Berlin hosted in January 2015 by Chancellor Angela Markel under the auspices of Germany’s G7 Presidency, which raised US$ 7.5 billion for the 2016-2020 period.

The UK and Gavi

The UK is one of Gavi’s six original donors and one of two donor countries that support Gavi through all three funding channels (direct grants, IFFIm and AMC).

For the 2000-2020 period, the UK has committed USD 3 billion in direct funding (2000-2020), of which USD 61 million (GBP 50 million) is allocated to the Matching Fund (2011-2015). Moreover, the UK has pledged USD 2.7 billion in IFFIm (for 2007-2029), USD 485 million to the pneumococcal AMC (for 2010-2018) and USD 40 million to IPV (for 2013-2018).

In 2011, Prime Minister David Cameron hosted Gavi’s donor pledging conference in London.

The 2021-2025 Investment Opportunity

Gavi's Investment Opportunity was launched at a high-level meeting hosted by the Government of Japan on the occasion of the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama on 30 August 2019. Prime Minister Abe announced Gavi’s Investment Opportunity launch in his opening speech at TICAD.

The Investment Opportunity highlighted that more children have been immunised with a wider range of vaccines than at any time in history.  With support from Gavi’s partners and bold commitments from donors, implementing countries and the private sector, the Alliance is poised to bring about even greater impact in the coming five years. Through its innovative approach to development, including innovative finance, the Alliance will help countries PREVENT disease with vaccines in order to PROTECT the next generation and ensure countries can PROSPER. By working together, and with enough support, we can achieve more impact, more efficiently and at a lower cost to donors than ever before.

With countries squarely in the driving seat, Gavi will help foster long-term sustainability and vaccine supply security through its unique transition model and market shaping efforts. Our work together – leveraging donor financing, empowering countries, shaping sustainable markets – will:

  • Allow us to achieve the Alliance’s goals and reach a further 300 million children between 2021 and 2025 and, through the full protection of the broadest vaccine portfolio in history, save an additional 7–8 million lives.
  • Catalyse country contributions of US$ 3.6 billion in domestic co-financing and self-funded vaccine programmes.
  • Contribute to a further US$ 80–100 billion in economic benefits.
  • Enhance the competitiveness and supply security of at least five Gavi-supported vaccine markets

In order to deliver on its ambitious plans and deliver the most comprehensive package of protection in Alliance history, Gavi will need at least US$ 7.4 billion in additional resources for the period 2021–2025.

Pivotal moment

This ambitious programme is realistic and within reach. Without critical funding however, we run the risk of losing the momentum of our hard-fought gains and even backsliding.

The next strategic period will be a critical one for Gavi and represents a turning point in our history. With the political will and investment of countries, the ingenuity of Alliance partners, and the generosity of its donors, we can achieve a world where we can make vaccines work for all.

Prevent, Protect, Prosper

This is the time to build on the unprecedented gains from Gavi’s past investments and historical achievements to bring about continued acceleration of immunisation.

Its collaborative model brings the best resources in global health and immunisation together and can continue to use innovation to achieve even stronger impact. Now is not the time for complacency. Now is the time for renewed commitment to help countries prevent disease, protect their communities and, above all, prosper.
